SABIC Helps Volvo Trucks Accelerate Sustainability with Valox iQ* Resin, the First Up-cycled Plastic Resin Used in a North American Truck

ORLANDO, Fla. — April 4, 2012 — Here at NPE 2012 (booth #29000), SABIC’s Innovative Plastics business announced a major new sustainability milestone with its longstanding customer, Volvo Trucks: the first use of an up-cycled material in a North American heavy truck from post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. Specifically, SABIC’s Valox iQ* polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) resin, which incorporates up-cycled water bottles, is used for the brackets of the side air deflection system for all seven models in the 2012 Volvo VN platform of heavy trucks. Valox iQ resin not only helps Volvo deliver top performance under harsh driving conditions, but also contributes toward greater sustainability. Additional SABIC solutions used to further enhance sustainability and performance in Volvo VN trucks include lightweight Noryl GTX* resin for the fenders, tough Cycoloy* resin for the grille and clear Lexan* resin for forward lighting. This joint achievement by Volvo Trucks and SABIC is the latest in a series of standard-raising innovations that deliver environmental benefits. View more and related images

SABIC and CK Technologies Help Volvo Trucks Blaze a New Trail with Industry’s First Injection-molded Thermoplastic Roof Fairing

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — March 26, 2012 — SABIC’s Innovative Plastics business today announced that its collaboration with CK Technologies, a provider of engineered plastic systems, and Volvo Trucks North America has produced the trucking industry’s first injection-molded roof fairing, soon to be featured on all 2013 Volvo heavy-duty trucks. This large component, molded with SABIC’s tough Cycoloy* polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/ABS) resin and CK Technologies’ proprietary in-mold coating (IMC) technology, delivers high strength, excellent heat stability and impact performance with a Class A surface. The roof fairing demonstrates the feasibility of replacing traditional thermosets with thermoplastics to reduce weight and energy requirements for manufacturing and enable recycling. Further, the IMC process yields a fully primed part, eliminating the secondary coating steps that generate volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This major breakthrough provides a more environmentally responsible alternative to thermosets without sacrificing the outstanding performance and aesthetics that truck OEMs and end customers expect.
